The holidays are bright and beautiful, but they can also be full of health challenges, whether you come down with an illness or are managing a chronic medical condition. As you visit loved ones far and near, do what you can to observe these travel health tips to keep yourself safe and healthy so you can truly enjoy the season, weather any storms that arise, and enter the new year feeling good about yourself.

Plan Ahead

The more planning you do for holiday travels, the calmer you will be. This can include making lists, packing bags early, loading the car in advance, and delegating tasks. Double-check medications, vitamins, and workout gear. Your stress level will decrease with every mark you make on your list, whether traveling by plane, train, or car.

Prioritize Sleep

Getting enough sleep is always a priority, but especially if you are part of a family that makes the holidays a little too stressful. Excuse yourself as needed to take a nap, go to bed early, or even stay at a hotel when you usually do not. Prioritize your sleep needs so you can stay healthy and sane and avoid excess anxiety, irritation, or exhaustion when you need energy most.

Take a Break

Mental health is just as important as physical health during the holiday season. It’s inevitable that you will run into challenges with a partner, child, relative, neighbor, coworker, or otherwise. Make space for yourself to take breaks, especially when traveling, so you can minimize burnout. Listen to what your body is telling you, whether that’s to go for a walk, drive, or detox from devices.

Say No

Not feeling the party invite you were excited about two weeks ago? It’s okay to send regrets, even if the party is in the same place where you’re staying. If your body and mind are feeling weighed down or exhausted, listen to them and honor their needs. This travel health tip can be the difference between a taxing and amazing holiday season.

Say Yes

If you have hunkered down for too long on your own or in the same house with the same people, it’s time to get out and see the lights, sounds, and festivities. Going out to explore is a great way to get space and enjoy your holiday travels.

All in Moderation

If you are living with a chronic condition or digestive disorder, pace yourself. Sure, the winter holidays come once a year, but overdoing it can damage your well-being if you have ongoing health concerns. You can still enjoy the season without being derailed by tempting foods or beverages when you travel. Make careful choices so you don’t overdo it.
