The month of May is dedicated to physical fitness and sports, but it is always a good time to celebrate movement. There are so many possible ways to design a physical fitness routine, and there is always a method that is right for you. I am eager to work with all my patients to help you identify manageable and safe ways to move your body and improve your health and wellness.

Identify the Physical Fitness That Is Right for You

Sports are not one size fits all. Some people do better on a team while others thrive in solo endeavors, some are motivated by working with a partner while others need a class to stay motivated. For many, though, fitness isn’t about who or where, but about gentle, consistent movement that gets the blood flowing in the body.

Motion is an integral piece of wellness, and the following types of physical fitness can create as much or as little of a challenge as your body can manage from day to day: yoga, walking, stretching, swimming, weight training, and pickleball.

Set Realistic Goals for Personal Health and Wellness

People who suffer with a chronic illness like Crohn’s disease or autoimmune condition like rheumatoid arthritis are often challenged when it comes to maintaining a regular fitness routine. It isn’t easy to overcome the hurdles your body and mind must endure every day. Telling your body to move when it’s telling you it’s time to rest is a daily conversation you need to have with yourself.

Speak with your doctor about recognizing when it’s reasonable to push through and when it’s necessary to give your body time to regain strength and stamina. Your unique circumstances will impact your condition and what’s possible when it comes to physical fitness. There are always low-impact routines that can make you feel accomplished, even when you’re feeling unwell.
